Ep. 38 Adoption and Mental Health - Part I

Adoption is complex in it’s implications in mental health and it is broad in scope.  In this episode, Heather and Gabriel begin to discuss the complex topic of adoption.  This topic will not be discussed in it’s entirety in this episode; it’s just too vast to fit into one episode.   For now,  they discuss the many ways in which one can be touched by adoption:

  • Birth families

  • Adopted individuals

  • Adoptive families

  • Preplacement

  • Post placement

  • Sibling experience

To fully support the mental health needs of this population, one must begin to understand the nuances of adoption including:

  • History of adoption and the ways it has changed over time

  • Understanding the nature of adoption with regards to family formation and the different types of adoption

  • Understand the clinical issues that are associated with separation and loss and attachment

  • Understand the developmental challenges in the experience of adoption

This is only the beginning of this discussion.  More episodes will follow on this topic.  Join the conversation and email us at contact@informedconsentpodcast.com to let us know your questions on Adoption and Mental Health for future episodes.
